After its success on the big screen, it seems another Sonic adaptation will also coming to the small screen. Over on Twitter, Netflix has accidentally announced that they will be releasing a Sonic the Hedgehog animated series in 2022. As I’m writing the article, the account has unfortunately deleted the tweet. Considering The Game Awards 2020 will be airing tonight, this might be a significant blunder on Netflix’s part. The Netflix Sonic series announcement could have been one of the surprise announcements on the show but it was revealed early by its social media account instead. In the now-deleted tweet, Netflix’s account wrote:
“Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. Speed? SONIC. SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ and @ManOfActionEnt premiering in 2022.”
Man Of Action Entertainment is well-known as the studio behind several hit cartoon series, including Generator Rex, Ultimate Spider-Man, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and the Ben 10 franchise. Meanwhile, WildBrain is a Canadian media, production, and brand licensing company. It has co-produced many children’s shows, such as Transformers: Rescue Bots, Snoopy in Space, and now is working on a new Felix the Cat series. Both companies have previously worked on another video game adaptation, Mega Man: Fully Charged… to a mixed and negative reception among the franchise fans.
Released back in February right before the pandemic peaked, Sonic movie became the highest-grossing superhero film of 2020. The sequel has officially been green-lit by Paramount Pictures and SEGA as well. Will they hit a home run again through the Netflix Sonic series, though? Only time will tell. Forgettable blunder like Fully Charged, moderate cult success like Sonic Boom, or another gangbuster like the movie? Tell me what your hopes and fears for this cartoon adaptation in the comments below.
