Emilia Perez is the story of an attorney who helps a cartel kingpin achieve gender-affirming surgery at the expense of leaving his family behind. It’s a wonderul story and even won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Drama. However, lead actress Karla Sofia Gascon seems to be anything but wonderful. Several years ago, the trans star took to Twitter to display her opinion against Islam. The spew of hateful posts goes so far as to call the religion,
“a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured”
The comments resurfaced as a result of her Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the film. However, what’s very interesting is that despite many of the posts being anti-Islam and Catalanophobic, one in particular criticized the Oscars specifically for being inclusive after the Black Lives Matter movement took charge. It will be interesting to see how other nominees and attendees will treat the star once she arrives to the red carpet. What’s even more interesting is how host Conan O’Brien will react once he realizes she’s in attendance. The comments under the original post detailing this also wish to hear Conan’s comments against her.
“I want her to go purely to watch her squirm as Conan absolutely obliterates her”
The actress is no stranger to controversy, and has deemed it all an attack on her person, considering herself a victim of cancel culture. Because Netflix will be sending the star to one of the more prestigious awards shows in entertainment, it’s likely that they don’t really care what people think of her.
Karla Sofia Gascon has made various public apologies since the messages resurfaced, but considering that many of the messages aren’t even a few years old, it will be hard for the public to forgive her. Let’s see what people think of her appearance at the Oscars on March 2.
