CCP Games has today announced the release of the first content update for its sci-fi sandbox FPS, EVE Vanguard, set within the EVE Universe. It heralds the introduction of all-new mechanics, including a prototype mining laser, a revamped combat suit for the Vanguard warclones, and dynamic new contracts that allow players to take a stand in the perpetual conflict between order and disorder in New Eden.
Founder’s Access members are granted exclusive early access to these features from today until March 25, 2024, available to all EVE Online accounts with an active Omega subscription.
March EVE Vanguard Update Brings New Mechanics
These additions are designed to enhance the connection between EVE Vanguard and EVE Online, providing a deeper, more integrated gaming experience.
Scott Davis, Lead Product Manager at CCP London, emphasized the studio’s commitment to an open development process, stating, “We’re dedicated to developing EVE Vanguard hand-in-hand with our passionate community.” He further highlighted the significance of the prototype mining laser and the evolved warclone suit as symbols of this commitment, allowing players to significantly influence the direction of the game.
Echoing this sentiment, Emily Akland, Senior Brand Manager for EVE Vanguard, addressed the importance of community feedback in shaping the game’s development. She noted, “The community’s feedback following each First Strike playtest has led us to make subtle yet impactful enhancements to gameplay.” Akland introduced the mining laser prototype as a strategic addition to resource gathering, marking a significant step towards realizing their vision for the ultimate sci-fi sandbox FPS.
The March update brings several key features to the game:
- Mining Laser Prototype: This tool allows players to tap into valuable mineral resources, requiring strategic environmental surveys to locate and extract ore from nodes, which are vital for fulfilling contract objectives.
- Mining and Salvage Contracts: Players can now choose to support either Suppression or Corruption forces, directly influencing the broader conflict within New Eden. These contracts are pivotal for territorial disputes, pirate insurgencies, and overall territorial alignments, integrating EVE Vanguard gameplay with the persistent world of EVE Online.
- New Warclone Suit (pictured above): A sleek, dexterity-focused suit that enables players to easily distinguish allies from enemy NPCs on the battlefield, enhancing tactical gameplay.
In addition to these features, the update continues the tradition of rewarding competitive play. By completing contracts and successfully extracting resources, players can earn a spot on a leaderboard, with the top 10 players receiving up to 3000 PLEX as a reward.
EVE Vanguard was first revealed back at Fanfest 23, where The Nerd Stash spoke with CCP Games’ CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson about the project. When asked about whether he thought it might isolate long-time MMO players, he stated that “worrying about upsetting people gets you nowhere.”
