It’s easy for families to feel sentimental and moved on the day of a loved one’s wedding. However, a grandmother was especially surprised and excited to find that her wedding dress was being honored in a way that she would never forget. Her granddaughter from New Jersey decided to wear her grandmother’s wedding dress. And although it’s 62 years old, it still looks just as incredible and elegant decades later.
Nobody ever wants to make their grandmother cry but one bride did it in the sweetest way. Chrissie Mellett was set to get married to her sweetheart at the St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church. Imagine Chrissie’s grandmother’s surprise when the beaming bride walked out in her grandmother’s wedding dress! The grandma uttered, “Chrissie, is that my dress?” and felt so overwhelmingly happy that she was moved to tears.
After the ceremony, Chrissie’s grandmother said, “You will never know how much you filled my heart with love and appreciation today. I appreciate it more now on you than I did on me at 21 years old.” That is so sweet, I’m getting a sugar rush! The beaming grandma, now 83 years old, was in attendance at the wedding with her husband of 62 years.
The dress was especially meaningful to Chrissie because her grandmother helped design it so many years ago. She said of the dress’s history, “My great grandma was a seamstress. My grandma said she really helped her design the dress. She was pulling all the strings and telling the person who made the dress what she wanted on it and where.” She instantly fell in love with the feeling of her grandma’s dress. Its “timeless, classic elegance” that you don’t happen to find on many dresses in our modern times.
Chrissie, who looks up to her grandparents and admires their love for one another after all these years, added, “I knew it would mean so much to her – and it would give both her and my poppy a chance to relive their own wedding day, all these years later.”
Chrissie plans to preserve the dress so that it will bring wonderful memories to their lives for years to come. It’s fitting, after all. Her family’s love for one another has carried on through the years, too!
