Marvel has released a new trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder on Twitter today, giving excited fans tons of new footage before the film’s July 8th release date. The new trailer shows Thor, god of thunder, assembling a team with his ex, Jane Foster, aka Mighty Thor, Valkyrie, Korg, and the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on Gorr the God Butcher, who Thor describes as “a maniac who seeks to end us all.”
Thor: Love and Thunder, also known as Thor 4, will see Chris Hemsworth return as Thor in the fourth Thor film and the sequel to Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, which was released in 2017. Waititi will return to direct Thor: Love and Thunder in addition to reprising his role as Korg, a gentle giant of a gladiator and Thor’s friend.
Previous trailers for the film have shown Thor embarking on a journey of love and self-discovery after the events of Avengers: Endgame: he’s lost some weight, brushed his hair, put on a new outfit, and reconnected with his old friends like Valkyrie, who he last teamed up with in Ragnarok. Thor has described this as his “superhero retirement” in previous trailers. Still, the official film synopsis describes Thor’s retirement as “interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods,” which is not a fun kind of disruption.
What the New ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Trailer Shows Fans
The newest trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder confirms what fans already know about the upcoming film: armed with a classic rock soundtrack and the ability to not take itself too seriously, Thor: Love and Thunder is a spiritual (as well as literal) successor to Thor: Ragnarok, boasting all the hallmarks of Taika Waititi’s directing style, according to Comicbook.com. The newest trailer shows Thor pulling a Jean-Claude Van Damme split to stop two alien-looking vehicles from crushing him, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) – now King of Asgard – teaming up armed with Mjolnir and a fantastic-looking sword, and two giant screaming goats possibly meant to pull a chariot of some sort. As with any Marvel movie, there are also quite a few shots of lightning and explosions, but Thor is also pulling a confused Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) into an intricate Asgardian handshake.
