As you begin your adventures in New World, you’ll soon notice a few essential differences from other MMOs. The lack of a classic class system gives you the freedom to create unique builds, and the primitive level of magic makes it more of a pleasant bonus than a powerful force that you can rely on. In this regard, you may notice a decrease in DPS when meeting new enemies, and it is at this moment many begin to think about damage types. New World has nine damage types with many features, which we will discuss below.

New World: Damage Types Explained

First, it is worth noting that New World offers only nine types of damage, divided into three physical and six elemental. At the same time, it is essential to clarify that the characters do not use magic from birth and can only use it as an attribute on a weapon. As for physical damage, it depends only on the quality and type of weapon you choose.

As we said, magic in the New World can only exist inside objects as a core or additional type of damage or for protection. For example, Fire Staff can only deal with Fire damage, and Healing Staff can only heal. At the same time, you can cast Niter or Frozen Fang to supplement your weapon with fire or ice damage, after which it will deal both physical and elemental damage.

It is important to note that each type of damage will be more or less effective against a particular enemy. At the same time, enemy attacks will deal more or less damage to you based on your equipment and, more importantly, the elemental item you placed in it. However, let’s talk in more detail about each type of damage. By the way, you can find a table of the effectiveness of each type of damage against different enemies at the end of this guide.

All Physical Damage

  • Strike – War Hammers.
  • Slash – Swords, Hatchets, Rapiers, Great Axes.
  • Thrust – Muskets, Spears, Bows, some Swords.

All Elemental Damage

Unlike physical damage, elemental damage is not inside the specific piece of equipment. You must use a specific item to add a definite elemental damage or protection. However, this process is more complicated with Elemental Staffs since you must use Arcana Station.

  • Arcane. Use a Vial of Corrupted Essence for a weapon or armor to add this elemental type.
  • Fire. Use Niter with a weapon or create a Fire Staff at an Arcana Station.
  • Ice. Use Frozen Fang for weapons or Aquamarine for armor to get this elemental damage type.
  • Lightning. Use Shard of Sparkmetal to add this perk. You can also use Arcana Station to create an Ice Gaunlet that deals exclusively Lightning damage.
  • Nature. Use Amber Gemstone on clothing or weapons. Please note that no enemy has resistance to this type of attack. As with fire, you can create a Healing Staff.
  • Void. Using Vacant Corrupted Insignia, you can create an amulet of protection against this effect. If you want to deal this damage, you will need a Void Gauntlet.

New World Damage Chart

Now that we have dealt with all types of damage, it is time to tell you about their effectiveness against specific enemies. We have already said that no enemy can resist the Nature damage type, but it is a little more complicated with other types.

To sum up all about damage in the New World, here is what you need to remember:

  • In total, the game has three physical and six elemental damage types.
  • The weapon can deal with one physical and one elemental damage type at the same time.
  • Each damage type is effective and weak against different enemies.
  • Elemental damage cannot exist outside of items.
  • No enemy has resistance to the Nature damage type.
