Working as a delivery driver can be quite taxing, with all the rushing about in and out of your car to take orders from store to customer. However, what can be specifically challenging is the competition between drivers to claim more orders faster for a bigger payout. And any driver caught cheating the system would likely upset everyone. That said, a New York Flex driver was furious when they discovered several of their ‘competitors’ were storing phones in a tree to make extra money.
“The driver in front of me got out of his car with one phone and ran to the tree to grab that phone and then went to get their order,” the driver explained, posting a photo of the culprit’s phone in the tree. “Another driver came shortly and put one of his three phones there too.” Because of this spoofing strategy that these cheaters had going with their multiple accounts and phones, the driver couldn’t get any orders. “These guys are out of control and greedy as hell,” they complained. “They can’t even speak English…. It is sad.”
This wasn’t the first time this New York Flex driver had griped about their competition, either. A few months ago, they spotted likely the same “thieves” taking an excessive number of orders using their cheat-botting system. Allegedly, several are Russian, with many others who could barely or didn’t speak English. They continued their tirade: “I heard from the wholefoods employee (manager) that a few of them don’t have social security numbers, but they have two to three phones and two to three accounts each?” The fact that these cheaters got away with doing this on top of not speaking English really bothered OP, but several commenters criticized them for bringing up language barriers as a point of complaint.
“‘They don’t even speak English’ so they deserve less because they don’t speak English yet?” asks a commenter. “What does speaking English have to do with this?” agreed another. One person chimed in, trying to explain the situation regarding the multiple phones and lack of English-speaking skills: “FLEX drivers have been embroiled in a kind of internal battle in which a large number of (apparently immigrant or minority) individuals have been swamping the daily work loads and aggressively claiming what work is available.” One person even got political, saying, “Speak whatever language you want. This place was literally built by immigrants.”
In the end, it technically doesn’t matter who speaks English or what country a driver is from. As long as the customer receives their order on time without any damage, the driver did a ‘good job.’ But the cheating and excessively competitive nature of Flex driving definitely seems to have made a toxic work environment, particularly for this New York driver.
