New York Man Leaves Car Parked for Three Weeks, Discovers Swarm of Rats Living in Filthy, Moldy Engine Bay: ‘Throw the Whole Car Away’

New York’s unofficial tenants

New York and rats go hand in hand. You see them everywhere: subway stops, piles of trash on the street, fundamentally part of the city’s identity at this point. Still, every so often, a rat story surfaces that makes your skin crawl. This time, a guy leaves his car parked on the street for three weeks, comes back, and finds rats have set up shop in his engine bay. And not just one or two, an actual swarm, living in muck and mold.

As per the viral video, the man left his car outside for a while, probably because a big snowstorm hit and he couldn’t use it. When the snow finally melted, he figured he would check things out. But as soon as he opened the hood, he realized he had stumbled into a nightmare. Rats had turned his engine into their own little apartment complex. That wasn’t even the worst thing he found.

The engine bay was stuffed with trash, shredded bits of who-knows-what, and thick grime everywhere. Mold clung to the parts, and from certain angles, it was almost impossible to figure out what you were even looking at. Rats, garbage, old buildup, everything seemed mashed together into one lumpy blob. Some people joked that the rats had just melted right into the mold, and it looked that way. The mix of twitchy movement, filth, and rot turned it into something you really didn’t want to keep watching.

Naturally, social media had a lot to say. People cracked jokes about how this is just what happens if you leave a car alone in New York for a while. Others said the guy should discard the car and move on. A few pointed out the obvious health hazards, bringing up bacteria, contamination, and how rats love to chew through wires and ruin engines. Some laughed it off, but plenty were grossed out.

Internet Reacts to New York Man’s Rat-Infested Car Nightmare

The disturbing clip left many viewers horrified, with some saying the damage looked beyond repair. “Throw the whole car away at this point,” one person wrote. Another added, “YIKES! probably ate all the wires.. what a headache!”

Several users were simply grossed out and confused by what they were seeing. “Did the rats melt together?? what am i even looking at,” one comment read. Another said, “I don’t know what I’m looking at. I’m not zooming in. I don’t want to know.”

Others turned the moment into a cautionary tale. “That’s what happens when you don’t move your car for a couple of weeks and mooch off the city. Let it be a lesson,” one user wrote. Another warned, “Can’t leave your vehicle unattended for too long. That car could be destroyed by the amount of wire damage.”

Some reactions mixed disgust with practicality. “The way I would’ve called the towing company myself to get rid of this??? EWWW,” a person commented. Meanwhile, another kept things light, adding, “That’s a Toyota, he’ll start it up and it will move just fine.”

As viral as the clip has become, the full backstory remains unclear. We don’t know the exact circumstances behind why the car sat untouched for so long or how extensive the damage truly is. What we do know is that the sight under that hood was anything but pleasant. In a city already known for its rat problems, leaving a vehicle idle can quickly turn into a nightmare.
