A man in New York is claiming on TikTok that he was able to cast his vote without showing any form of ID because the poll workers allegedly told him that he was not required to provide one, even though he offered it. He recorded himself from a low angle at the check-in table, repeatedly questioning the staff about how they would confirm his identity if no identification was needed before receiving a ballot.
In the video, he asks, “So you don’t want my ID? How do you know it’s me then?” One of the poll workers responds that they could look him up “manually.” The man suggests that someone could simply give a false name, but the worker explains that signatures are used to verify voter identity and repeats that he is not supposed to hand over his ID. The man appears confused by this explanation and questions how a signature could be verified if it is not being checked against a physical ID.
He Was Concerned About the Process
When the worker asked him for the first three letters of his last name, the man briefly held out his ID again, saying he wanted to make the process easier and ensure they were verifying the right person. The staff continued to explain that they were following the procedure they had been instructed to use. They eventually took the ID, but only after noting, “We’re not supposed to ask.” After a few minutes, one of them stated that they located his information by using his date of birth and manual entry.
The man continued expressing concern, noting that if an ID is not checked, there is no guarantee that the signature on file actually matches the voter standing at the table. In the comments, he even claimed that he “purposely scribbled a line” as his signature and was still allowed to vote.
Here’s What People Are Saying About the New York Man’s Video
A lot of people in the comments of the TikTok video felt that the voting process seemed unusual. One person wrote, “My signature changes all the time. This is unbelievable.” A second said, “Picture ID should be required.” A third commented, “You have to show ID for everything else, you should absolutely have to show ID to vote.” A fourth added, “This is CRAZY. What if your [sic] a first-time voter? What ‘signature’ are they looking at?”
Some netizens also suggested that the situation pointed to possible loopholes in the voting system, with one comment reading, “Illegals are definitely voting in nyc.” Someone else remarked, “If they don’t care to look at your ID… they darn sure ain’t worried about your signature.” Another viewer said, “Fraud is so rampant in our voting system. An ID and proof of citizenship should always be required. I’m so fed up with our government.”
