New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently instructed local agencies to strengthen protections for immigrants from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in locations considered “sanctuaries.” The decision caused some backlash, as some New York residents believe that it is not within the city’s jurisdiction to interfere with federal government actions.
According to The New York Times, Mamdani recently shared an audit on the enforcement of the city’s “sanctuary” laws. These laws were designed to prevent the local administration from cooperating with ICE in certain locations, such as courthouses, and from sharing sensitive information with immigration officials.
The audit reveals that over 5,500 people were arrested by ICE in New York between January 2025 and March 2026. The data highlights a concerning trend for the local administration, as over half of these arrests occurred at 26 Federal Plaza, where asylum hearings take place. In response to these numbers, Mamdani called for stronger actions.
Internet Reacts to Mamdani’s Response to ICE in New York
Some New York residents disagreed with the way Mamdani is handling immigration enforcement in the city. On Reddit’s r/nyc, one user commented, “Why is Mamdani trying to obstruct federal law enforcement? If you’re illegal, you should be deported.” Others echoed this outrage, asking, “What authority does a mayor of a locality have over federal officers?”
What irritated some users was that the Mamdani administration did not seem to be paying enough attention to local issues. As someone explained, “I wish he’d toughen the response to our homegrown criminals so we can have some peace and quiet.”
Some other folks agreed with the decision, however, showing sympathy to the people who have been arrested by ICE in New York: “Mamdani rocks! And anyone who laughs at what’s happening in the US when it comes to illegals are awful people. Plain and simple.”
Others said, “ICE kidnaps people who are legally allowed to be here all the time. If you follow all the rules and attend all of your appointments for getting your asylum application approved, you should not be allowed to be kidnapped without warning.”
While Zohran Mamdani and New York City have limited jurisdiction over how to deal with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the mayor appears to be doing his best to limit the agency’s actions, and these actions have clearly divided local opinion.
