Many things happen in New York City subway, but it’s certainly not every day you hear about someone daring to act inappropriately with a corpse. This grim story unfolded aboard a southbound R train near the Whitehall Street station. An unnamed man reportedly died of natural causes, though it remains unclear exactly when he passed. Unfortunately, his misfortune didn’t end with his death.
At around 10:45 p.m., a female suspect was seen stealing from the man while he was still unconscious. Then, at approximately 12:08 a.m., a second suspect, a man, appeared. This individual not only robbed the deceased but also allegedly engaged in sexual acts with the corpse before fleeing the New York City subway.
The first suspect, who only committed the robbery, was wearing a yellow hoodie, black pants, and a black baseball cap. The second suspect, a man involved in the more disturbing part of the incident, was dressed in a blue baseball cap, a black hooded jacket over a yellow hoodie, blue jeans, and red and white sneakers. He was also carrying a black backpack. He’s described as having black hair, brown eyes, standing about 5’9″ tall, and weighing around 195 pounds.
The police realized something was off when someone reported a body still lying in a New York subway car. After checking the MTA surveillance footage, they found that the victim had been slumped in the seat for several hours before the second suspect showed up. Allegedly, that suspect pulled the body off the seat and laid it on the floor.
New York police are still looking for the suspect, and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers. News of the incident left many people shocked and disturbed. “JFC… what a terrible day to be literate,” one Redditor commented.
Others expressed disbelief over what kind of punishment the man might face for sexually assaulting a corpse. “Looking it up, seems like necrophilia is only a misdemeanor in New York. If that’s his only charge, under a year in jail,” another user wrote. “That said, I dunno what else they’ll end up charging him with. Hopefully a few that run consecutively, not concurrently.”
Some users began criticizing the NYPD for their slow response, pointing out that this wasn’t the only troubling incident happening in the New York subway. Many people were frustrated with the police. “Why are there so many NYPD cops down there then? Couldn’t stop a shooting, a woman being burned alive, a dead person being violated sexually… Literally, what the hell do they actually do besides play games on their phones like the adult versions of iPad babies?” one Redditor asked.
