It’s always nice to see teachers going above and beyond their basic role to show interest in their students, no doubt. However, things can get dicey if school staff show a little too much interest in their students’ lives, especially their sexuality. That said, a Spanish teacher at C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville, New York, has been placed on paid leave after she questioned a female student who came out as bisexual. For context, this didn’t happen in Spanish class but within the after-school Christian youth group Youth Alive, a chapter from an organization founded by Charlie Kirk.
According to Syracuse.com, the Baldwinsville teacher acted improperly, pressing the high schooler about her sexuality before saying that she needed to leave the after-school group. At first, the teacher didn’t even bother talking to the girl’s mother about any of this drama. But when the mom found out, she was supportive of her daughter yet very anti-confrontational about the whole ordeal by saying things like, “You’re going to lose no matter what…You’re not going to win this one. She’s an adult, and you’re a kid.”
After being pressured to quit, the student told the principal, which resulted in the Baldwinsville teacher being put on leave by school district officials. The principal, however, is on the teacher’s side and openly criticizes the LGBTQ+ community, including gay and transgender rights. While people are entitled to their own opinions, many online commenters strongly disagree that the teacher talked about the girl’s sexuality at all, let alone have her punished for it.
“Literally zero reason for a teacher to speak about this with a student,” remarks a Redditor. “This teacher is way out of line and needs to be removed immediately,” seconded another. “This is why we decided to have separation of church and state in the first place,” chimed in a third. “Public schooling and religious sects do not mix.”
Apparently, this isn’t the first time this teacher has been controversial due to her beliefs, according to one commenter: “She’s been a problem for awhile. She and her husband are both maga trash. Bville has a lot of problems they need to work out.” Hopefully, the student doesn’t have to endure any more mistreatment or harassment from other school staff after this whole ordeal.
