New York Woman Can’t Even Have Valentine’s Day Flowers Without Parents Being Miserable, ‘What a waste of money’

Someone’s jealous

Imagine somebody doing something very kind for you and someone else rains on your parade. Unfortunately, misery loves company and so many people have to try and bring you down to your level. And what if that ‘someone’ was your parents? That’s what one New York woman’s parents did when she received Valentine’s Day flowers. Instead of letting her know what a kind gesture it was, they immediately focused on the wrong point, if there was a point at all.

TikToker Elaine (TikTok/Dewyelaine), shared a video of what was originally going to be her reaction to the flowers she got for Valentine’s Day, but instead captured her parents being obnoxious and miserable. You can hear her father saying, “What a waste of money,” while Elaine is expressing her love for the giant box of purple and white flowers, in addition to roses.

She sounds elated as she walks toward the flowers but Elaine’s mother remarks the bouquet “Has to be at least $100,” which isn’t even that much for a bouquet of flowers, anyway.

In an update video, Elaine responds to a comment left on her original TikTok video. The commenter explained, “As Asian kids, we gotta stop being so nice and allowing this. Start talking back, telling them to shut up. If we say nothing, they’ll continue this behavior.”

About this, Elaine states she wasn’t even expecting to record her parents saying those things. She was enjoying her third Valentine’s Day with her partner and was ecstatic they got her a gift. Instead, what she captured only made her feel “really sad.” And her parents still brush off such a gift from a three-year relationship?

Apparently, this is not the first time Elaine has dealt with this from her parents and there’s really no surprise there. Parents who put down their children typically follow a pattern of doing it over and over again. Elaine thanks her audience for the sweet messages they left her during this time that left her feeling really emotional.

One commenter said, “I’m a very nice person and I’d hate to be rude, but you can say something like ‘it’s not a waste if I use it’ ‘good thing it’s not for you’ so that they can stop. Even straight up asking, ‘Why do you say that every time I’m happy?’ You deserve so many nice things and your feelings are valid.” It’s funny when you do this, because very few people have anything good to say after.

Another person shared their own experience, stating they “stopped taking my family out to eat” because it always turned into a “lecture on wasting money.” What’s the point of being upset over enjoying yourself?

One other commenter said, “Normalize telling parents to hush if they don’t have anything positive to say.” If you’d do that with strangers, why is family any different? If they’re being rude, call them out!
