Americans have a long-standing love affair with cars. From coast to coast, vehicles are seen as symbols of freedom, independence, and success. In many places, owning a car is even considered a milestone of adulthood. Those who do not drive are sometimes unfairly viewed as people who have not “made it” yet. Unfortunately, that kind of mindset can lead to some ugly encounters, especially for people who prefer other forms of transportation, such as bicycles or motorbikes. One biker in New York recently found himself at the center of such an incident, and it quickly turned ugly.
In a video he shared on social media, the New York man can be seen riding his motorbike when a woman suddenly steps in front of him, blocking his way. Startled and not wanting to hit her, he stopped immediately. What followed was a bizarre and uncomfortable confrontation that is now sparking outrage online.
The New York woman began by telling him he was not allowed to ride on the road. Confused, the young man explained that he was simply heading home. She then snapped back, suggesting that he should ride his bike in his own yard and had no right to be on the street. When he tried to stay calm, she shifted gears and started making assumptions about his background, asking whether his parents were from the United States and implying that they must be poor.
Trying to disguise her hostility as concern, the woman claimed she was only worried for his safety, saying he was not wearing enough protective gear and would get terribly hurt in an accident. Her tone made it clear this was no friendly advice. She went on to accuse him of being underage and unlicensed. When he told her that he did, in fact, have a license, she mocked him, saying that if he really had one, he would be driving a car instead of a bike. Finally, she told him to get a job and buy a real car.
The young man, clearly trying to avoid escalating the situation, kept his cool and eventually managed to get away. Online, however, viewers were stunned by what they saw. “Christ, lady. Get a life,” one Reddit user wrote. Others called out her blatant racism and classism, noting how she assumed the biker was an immigrant or from a poor family. “You can see the bitterness and racism exuding from her,” another user commented. “What a pathetic existence. The young man handled himself really well.”
