You’ve probably heard tons of ridiculous stories from people flying to various places in the world. Sometimes, Airlines get way out of hand with the way they treat their customers. In a recent tale, a New York woman throws something completely different at us. She tells the story about how Delta Airlines made her physically crawl over another person to get to her seat. What makes it more terrible is that this passenger was disabled and immobile.
Jaimie (@thefloraldame), a viral florist, posted a TikTok video of her recent experience with Delta Airlines. When she got to her seat on her recent flight, she found an elderly man sitting in the middle seat. Jaimie told the man that she had to get to her window seat by walking past him but he didn’t respond and didn’t move. She decided to flag down a flight attendant. The attendant told her, “Oh yeah, this man is immobile. He’s paralyzed from the waist down.”
When she explains she has to get into her seat, she’s shocked by what the attendant tells her. He says, “Oh, you’re gonna have to climb over him in order to get to your window seat.” In Jaimie’s eyes, she feels like this is a “huge liability.” The attendant says that’s fine and that they’ll go find the man’s caregiver. For some reason, they seated the caregiver all the way at the back of the plane. They ask the caregiver how immobile the man is, and she tells them, “He can’t move his legs.”
At this point, Jaimie is feeling annoyed by the entire situation, because why would they seat him there full well knowing she needs to get to her seat? How are you going to ask someone to crawl over another living human being? In the end, Jaimie offered up her seat to the caregiver and took the seat at the back of the plane so she could sit with him instead. The caregiver said that just that morning they found out they would be separated. It’s definitely a strange oversight on Delta’s part. It’s also an example of how businesses don’t care how uncomfortable they make you even when you’re the one paying.
Jaimie stated that their “expectation” that she would be fine climbing over this man’s body was way out of line. She’s right. She went on to say that it was “so incompetent of the flight staff” and “extremely unacceptable.” As one commenter asked, “So what were they going to do if you were also physically incapable of climbing over another human? Why would they separate the caregiver? Everything about this was handled poorly on their end.” So true. And the fact that they had such disrespect for a disabled man is atrocious in itself!
