I can’t imagine anything more stressful than being told your plane’s engine isn’t working while you’re already in the air. Plane-related accidents are so rare but that doesn’t mean they don’t happen at all. For a flight that took off from New Jersey, passengers experienced what true terror felt like this past week. In a scary turn of events, their JetBlue plane endured engine failure and chaos broke out within minutes. One New York TikToker shares all the details, as she was on the flight at the time.
Carley (@carley_hannah) shared her story on TikTok after the scariest flight experience traveling from Newark to West Palm Beach. Carley was on JetBlue Flight 543 and, right off the bat, nothing seemed amiss. She was sitting in a window seat and was watching everything going on outside until they hit 10,000 feet. At that point, Carley said everybody heard a “huge boom” and the plane started shaking. Everybody started freaking out when they saw smoke and smelled a fire.
At first, everybody suspected the fire might have been coming from inside the plane from a lithium battery. However, they soon noticed that the engine was on fire. The pilot came on the speaker and told everybody there was “engine failure” and they would be heading back to the airport immediately. Luckily, they were able to safely land the plane at the airport but it was filled with smoke with the passengers inside. They instructed the passengers to keep their heads by their feet for the freshest air and to wear masks if they struggled to breathe. Carley said everybody was freaking out and even the flight attendants were crying because they were so scared.
All of a sudden, Carley said the pilot came on the speaker and told everybody to “evacuate,” which caused chaos to break out even more. Carley said everybody started “stampeding” in the dark to the front of the plane. They helped the passengers use a slide to get safely onto the ground. It definitely sounds like something out of an action-thriller movie!
When all was said and done, Carley said that everybody received a “$12 voucher” for the mess. The chaos continued, as many people were now left without a flight and had to re-book. However, the airport was closed until almost midnight, which meant that a lot of people were stranded and left without options. Somehow, Carley worked up the bravery to board another flight, knowing that “the odds of it happening again” were low. But I can’t imagine it was easy to make that decision after a fright like that!
One commenter quipped, “Flight attendants crying???? I would’ve accepted that it was my time.” Another commenter stated in disbelief, “The audacity to offer a $12 voucher after all that.”
