New York Woman Turned Off by Company’s Ridiculous Interview Process, Declines an Interview, ‘I Draw a Bold Line When a Company Asks for Free Labor’

Sounds like she dodged a bullet with this one

Workers are starting to realize that many large companies are asking way too much from them. From ‘mandatory volunteer’ time to little pay for those with degrees, workplaces are doing too little for their employees. Now, a New York woman is sharing a recent experience she had while interviewing for a company. A lot of red flags were going up, and she realized it probably wasn’t going to be worth her time. She uses this to warn others about what to look out for when interviewing for jobs.

Stephanie (@stephaniechen) shared a TikTok video about a recent experience she had with a company while applying for jobs. As Stephanie said, she declined to take an interview with them. Why? In her words, “I thought their interview process was way too ridiculous and extensive.” This is especially true, considering it was for an entry-level marketing job.

Stephanie says the company was asking for five rounds of interviews and was interested in paying their new employee around 50k to start. She said this didn’t seem normal, as they were asking you to interview for an hour and a half each round. This is literally hours out of somebody’s time, likely spread out over several weeks. They also requested multiple references, and each candidate was required to complete a full project before starting with them. They weren’t offering pay for that project, so it was basically just unpaid labor. Stephanie went on to say, “No one should have to do what feels like a full time job in order to get a full time job.” This is so true.

One commenter mentioned on her video, “I draw a bold line when a company asks for free labor.” Another commenter pointed out, “They are not hiring. Companies pretend to hire and get free labor by doing this all the time.” Companies have been known to exploit job seekers on platforms like Indeed. They’ll ask for several work submissions or a week-long trial where they can take writing or marketing resources from ‘potential candidates.’ In the end, nobody gets hired. Then, they do it all over again to a whole new group of people. These are things to be watchful of if you’re looking for new employment.
