Doom is coming to the world of Hearthstone. The next expansion set to Blizzard’s popular card game is entitled “Whispers of the Old Gods,” and it has a very Lovecraftian feel to it. This 134 card expansion will contain four extremely powerful and influential “Old Gods” with game breaking abilities, surely enticing Hearthstone players to gamble with expensive or dangerous to play cards. To get a sense of what Hearthstone is trying to do with these cards, here is C’Thun, which will be given to every player upon the release of Whispers of the Old Gods:
Doesn’t seem that groundbreaking, considering the cost. But herein lies one of the central mechanics of Whispers of the Old Gods – every player will also receive two copies of this little lovely:
There are already multiple revealed cards that build up C’Thun’s power level, regardless of where it is. This will make every game in which C’Thun is involved more and more stressful, as your opponent will surely be dreading when you drop a 14/14 creature that also deals 14 damage as soon as it hits the board. Of course, you might be dreading the exact same thing from the other side of the table. Surely, Hearthstone deck builders everywhere are penciling in Emperor Thaurrisan-Shadowstep-Conceal decks and waiting to see what other craziness will be revealed.
There is no release date yet for Whispers of the Old Gods, but it is merely listed as “Coming Soon.” Although the cards have yet to be revealed, Blizzard has also announced that the other gods of the set will be Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, and N’Zoth. Here’s the teaser trailer to give you a sense of what to expect:
