Nick Cannon is sharing more about his mental health journey weeks after revealing his narcissistic personality disorder diagnosis. The TV personality, infamously known for welcoming 12 children, opened up about living with multiple neuropsychiatric disorders. The Wild’ n Out host confessed that he did not fully understand his mental health condition. However, getting tested was the first step to him embracing these hidden parts of himself and ultimately healing. While reflecting on his disorders, Cannon said:
“I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD. Even as a kid, it was dyslexia, but just knowing that I’m just a neurodivergent individual, I kind of always knew.”
Cannon noted that he has been accepting his recent ADHD diagnosis and using it as a tool to improve. He explained that there were too many labels related to mental health, making it challenging to accept one’s self. However, he did not let that stop him from embracing mental health and therapy. The TV personality said it took bravery “to embrace it and say, ‘Look, I’m healing. I need help. Show me.'”
Cannon noted that he wished to be an example for others while healing during the self-process. He first opened up about his mental health in the November 8 episode of his Counsel Culture podcast. Cannon told Dr. Cheyenne Bryant, a Doctor of Psychology, that he had been “clinically diagnosed” with narcissistic personality disorder. He claimed he resonated with nearly all “markers” for the disorder but had taken their power over him.
By researching and understanding the meaning of narcissism, Cannon claimed he had taken all power related to the term. He noted that people could call him whatever they wanted; however, it wouldn’t hurt because he understood his condition. “If I didn’t know what it was, then I have issues with it,” he explained, per PEOPLE.
Nick Cannon Reflects on the End of His Marriage to Mariah Carey
A month before sharing his mental health diagnosis, We covered Cannon’s candid reflections on his divorce from Mariah Carey. The Drumline actor accepted that his insecurities led to the end of his union with the superstar singer. He felt emasculated by her presence, saying:
“I would lay up at night thinking, like, ‘Is this who I am?’ Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?'”
Cannon noted Carey provided him with a “comfortable” life that involved her staff bringing him “steaks on a platter.” However, these luxuries only increased his worries about not being the alpha in their marriage. He recalled holding her “purse and the diaper bag” while the singer did her thing. The incident, among others, made Cannon reflect on himself and what type of man he wished to be. Eventually, he realized he was not the man Carey needed and had to leave their union.
Despite his confession, some fans saw it as an excuse to cover up his “inferiority.” Someone bashed Cannon for being out of Carey’s league and advised women against “dating down.” Another claimed he had multiple children with different women so they could carry the diaper bags. Others echoed similar sentiments, slamming the media personality for spewing nonsense.
Could Nick Cannon’s recent mental health diagnosis have something to do with his divorce?
