Bad news for those Nintendo fans hoping for a Switch Pro. The gaming giant has come out and told investors that a new Switch model is not in the works. The news came courtesy of Nintendo president and CEO, Shuntaro Furukawa. As of now, there are “no plans” to produce a new Switch version for the year 2020.

Nintendo: No Switch Pro or New Model Coming in 2020

Shuntaro Furukawa spoke during the reveal for the Animal Crossing-theme Nintendo Switch model. Furukawa says that the Switch is currently in its “midway phase” of life, referring to the console’s release in March 2017. The president of Nintendo feels that after two years, the company’s latest console has a lot more to give. Furukawa also expressed an interest in further developing the Nintendo Switch Lite, which launched last year.

Sales for the Nintendo Switch have continued to soar, with the latest report showing 52 million consoles sold since release. The handheld-only Switch Lite model released last year to strong sales, contributing greatly to how many units have been sold. Furthermore, the console’s release in China means that Nintendo Switch sales figures will continue to remain strong.

At this point, releasing a new Switch model would not make a ton of sense for Nintendo. The company has released both the Switch Lite and a newer Switch version, each with a longer battery life than the original. Despite that, rumors for a Switch Pro have been circulating for a while now. While things could change, Furukawa seems focused on making the Switch the best console it can be.
