Sometimes, it really does rain cats and dogs, as the saying goes. Well, at least in North Carolina‘s case, it’s just a cat, singular. In Swain County, a driver was going down Highway 74 when a bald eagle suddenly dropped a cat right onto the windshield. Needless to say, the cat did not survive, neither did the windshield, as the poor animal left a gaping hole in the glass. Fortunately, the local Highway Patrol has confirmed that the driver was uninjured, as such an incident could have caused quite an accident, according to WLOS.
“You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield,” the driver told 911. “It absolutely shattered my windshield.” The responder had quite a funny response, saying that they’ve heard “crazier” stories during their career. Speaking of wild stories, one Redditor joked about what sort of explanation the driver would have to give to their insurance company. “That’s going to be an interesting insurance claim,” the user laughed. “Imagine being habitually late for work for various reasons, and then having to call in using this excuse… 🤣🤣” joked another commenter.
Another commenter chimed in, sharing their story of when a buzzard dropped a turtle on their car while driving at 60 mph. “That was a fun dent and scratch to explain,” they recalled. While plenty more online users made jokes about the situation, some people were quite sympathetic to the poor cat. “A sad ending for the poor cat who was likely someone’s beloved pet. It must have been terrifying for the kitty,” remarked a user.
Other people warned that stories like this are the reason people shouldn’t let their cats roam about on their own. “Domestic cats are not equipped to be outside. They are indoor animals, and should be treated as such,” states a commenter, explaining how invasive domestic cats can be to a natural ecosystem. Cats kill small birds, while predators, like coyotes, wolves, or even bald eagles, might make a meal out of a house cat.
