North Carolina Locals Erupt at Trump Crime Claims: ‘No Grasp on Reality’ as State Data Tells a Different Story

Numbers don’t lie

President Donald Trump painted a grim picture of North Carolina at a recent campaign rally, but official crime statistics tell a strikingly different story, and some locals are making their feelings known.

Trump, appearing in Gastonia on Sept. 16 to campaign for Republican Senate nominee Michael Whatley, described North Carolina as “one of the most violent” states and “one of the worst in the whole nation.” He also described cities as “blood-soaked killing fields” while attacking former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who is running against Whatley.

But a WBTV report highlighted an awkward contradiction: crime has actually been falling sharply.

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, violent crime dropped 5.8% during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period last year. Property crime fell 11.9%, firearm homicides dropped 14.1%, and motor vehicle theft fell by more than 20%.

Even the White House touted North Carolina’s falling crime figures on the very day Trump made his remarks, crediting his administration while highlighting drops in murders, robberies and vehicle thefts.

‘Trump has no grasp on reality’

That contradiction did not escape North Carolinians discussing the report on the state’s Reddit community.

One commenter delivered perhaps the thread’s bluntest assessment: “Trump has no grasp on reality. So who cares what he says.” Another immediately replied: “Unfortunately, many do.”

Others turned Trump’s dramatic description of the state into a punchline. One resident joked that they had left home for errands and had somehow managed to avoid the supposed “blood-soaked killing fields” before returning safely. Another sarcastically asked whether insulting North Carolina was now a campaigning technique.

The statistics do not mean North Carolina has eliminated serious crime. State officials reported increases in intimidation and kidnapping, with intimate-partner violence featuring prominently, while Charlotte recorded 40 homicides at midyear compared with 39 during the same period in 2025.

But the wider direction is difficult to square with the picture Trump presented. Charlotte’s violent crime was down 8% through June, robberies fell 23%, and vehicle thefts dropped 31%, according to police.

That leaves North Carolina with two competing political pictures: a state portrayed from the rally stage as consumed by violence, and one where official figures show crime moving sharply in the opposite direction. For locals mocking the disconnect online, that gap was precisely the point.
