A disturbing video shot on a quiet street in Wilmington, North Carolina, is going viral on X. It shows an upsetting moment: an elderly man, looking lost and fragile, shows up at his neighbor’s door wearing nothing but an orange T-shirt and a dirty adult diaper. People are furious, and it’s hard to blame them.
The clip shows Pigford coming to the scene after the elderly man, who looked weak, confused, and probably had a cognitive condition, walked to his neighbor’s house wearing an adult diaper that was clearly dirty and no other clothes that were appropriate for being outside.
Pigford starts to gently lead him back to his own house. The caregiver then stops them, turns the man around, and makes him walk away from the house and down the street in the opposite direction.
When Pigford complains about the dirty diaper, the man’s condition, and the lack of proper clothing, the carer ignores him and says she is “teaching him a lesson.”
Apparently, the elderly man’s caregiver is actually his sister. Pigford, the neighbor who filmed everything, says he has been concerned about this situation for a long time. This incident was the final straw, as he couldn’t ignore it anymore, so he recorded what happened and called the authorities right after.
He says he contacted Social Services, the police, and a detective because he wants the man to live out his last years with dignity and real care. After he posted the video on X, it took off, sparking outrage and thousands of replies.
Internet Reacts to North Carolina Caregiver’s Harsh Treatment Of Elderly Man
Calls for legal action dominated much of the response. “The caregiver should be charged with elder abuse,” one person wrote, while another added pointedly: “Elder abuse is a Felony. Especially mentally impaired elderly.” A third commenter thanked Pigford directly: “Thank you for stepping up to help — she is disgusting. He has no idea what he’s doing.”
Several responses focused specifically on the elderly man’s vulnerability and what his reaching out to a neighbor revealed. “My heart hurts for this older gentleman. He was reaching out to his neighbor for help,” one person wrote. Another put it simply: “I don’t understand what lesson needs to be taught to an elderly man who needs good care towards his last days. I think that caregiver needs to be taught the lesson.”
The clip is resonating because of the specific cruelty of the framing. It’s not uncommon to see videos of caretakers abusing elderly people online, but the caregiver’s casual excuse, “teaching him a lesson”, applied to a confused, frail man in a dirty diaper who went to his neighbour for help, strikes viewers as particularly cruel.
Pigford’s decision to step in, film, and follow up with several authorities instead of just walking away has also been praised by the public, who are becoming more aware of who steps up in these situations and who doesn’t.
