A North Carolina mother of four named Brittany was forced to deal with an “uncomfortable moment” while out shopping with her children. The mother revealed that she had been out running errands with her children when a stranger made a comment about their family, even going as far as to ask if her children were adopted. What resulted was her children feeling sad and offended by the question, since they are multiracial and their mother is white.
Brittany shared on TikTok that she was “shocked” by the stranger’s question, and even though the kids are hers biologically, she didn’t appreciate the rudeness or assumptions made by the woman.
“So we go and we’re getting all of our stuff for camp, because the boys leave for camp tomorrow, and we go up to the register, and we’re just like chatting with the lady and she’s talking about how much four kids are,” the mother revealed.
North Carolina Mother Stunned When Stranger Asks If Her Biracial Children Are Adopted
Brittany revealed that she totally agreed with the woman at first, telling her it was a lot to have four young children. However, after realizing that the children belonged to Brittany, the woman looked a little confused, even asking, “Wait, they’re your kids?” When Brittany confirmed that they were her children, the stranger then asked if they were adopted.
“She literally asked me, in front of my children, if they’re all adopted,” Brittany continued, saying she tried to laugh it off by joking that she “gave birth to all of them.” However, the kids didn’t think the situation was so funny. She went on to say that her two sons are “very angry” about the situation. “Why would someone ask that?” they questioned their mother.
She then showed her children, who were still annoyed by the situation. “Not all families look like each other, and that’s fine,” Brittany concluded the video as she and her beautiful children strolled through a parking lot.
In the caption, Brittany revealed that her son, Levi, is still trying to process the situation.
“Levi made such an amazing point. Heโs been processing all morning and said, ‘Thereโs no way that comment is ok. Either we are adopted and thatโs a super [insensitive] question or weโre not. Either way theyโre just pointing out that we donโt fit as a family.โ
TikTok was also unhappy about the situation, showing support for Brittany and her multiracial family.
“Regardless if adopted or not, they are still YOUR kids. Adoption doesnโt minimize that fact,” one person pointed out.
“Yep as a biracial kid, unfortunately this happens!” another chimed in.
“That’s pretty rude,” another agreed.
However, Brittany made it a teaching moment for her kids, and hopefully, went on to enjoy the sunny North Carolina day with her beautiful children.
