North Carolina Mom Turns Pickpocket Drama Into Viral Showdown: ‘I Have Eight Kids, You’re Not Getting Past Me’

Messed with the wrong mom.

Venice may be known for gondolas and postcard-perfect bridges, but for one North Carolina mom, her family vacation turned into something closer to a crime thriller. A viral video has captured the moment she grabbed a teenage pickpocket by the hair after her purse, which contained her passport, credit cards, and a metal water bottle, was stolen.

The video, which has spread rapidly across social media, shows the woman clutching the suspect by her ponytail as the alleged thief unleashes a piercing scream. Unimpressed, the mom delivers a deadpan line that instantly won over the internet:

“I have eight kids. You’re not getting past me.”

The incident unfolded as the couple searched for their Airbnb. In a message later shared by her daughter, the mom explained that the area was crowded, and a group of girls slowed her down just before her purse went missing. Once inside the Airbnb, she realized the bag was gone. But thanks to her AirPods, she was able to track it down. That’s when she and her husband confronted the suspects.

But the viral video didn’t tell the whole story. In a follow-up TikTok, her daughter revealed the confrontation escalated when an accomplice swung the stolen bag and struck her mother in the face. The blow left her with a black eye and stitches.

According to Italian reports, the girl held by her ponytail was just 14 years old and was briefly detained before being released. Another suspect was later caught at the airport, which allowed police to recover the woman’s passport and credit cards, though her cash and AirPods were gone for good.

Despite the injury, the mom’s determination and one-liner resonated with viewers. On Reddit, commenters praised her toughness, joking that after raising eight kids, no pickpocket tantrum could faze her. Others noted the tactic of “handoffs,” where thieves quickly pass stolen goods to an accomplice to avoid being caught red-handed, which is a detail that helps explain the chaotic scuffle captured on camera.

Venetians themselves reportedly showed sympathy toward the family, helping them navigate the aftermath. Still, the ordeal has become a cautionary tale for tourists: in Venice, it’s not just gondoliers you have to watch out for.

As one Redditor put it bluntly: “Don’t be a thief.”
