You could say that it’s pretty important to understand the job you applied for. As many politicians have shown us, both liberal and conservative, making a paycheck is more important than helping the American people. One North Carolina sheriff left lawmakers shocked when he knew very little about his own position. You would think a sheriff understands how his job pertains to the government. He was asked a very simple question that most middle-schoolers could probably answer and somehow didn’t know.
A TikTok video posted by @thetruwire shows a conversation between a Republican lawmaker and a Democratic sheriff in North Carolina. It certainly sparked strong reactions. State Representative Allen Chesser was shocked when he asked Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden, “What branch of government do you operate under?” The sheriff paused and answered, simply, “Mecklenburg County.” Not satisfied with the clearly wrong answer, Chesser asks McFadden a second time. McFadden then replies with an alarming, “The Constitution of the United States.”
That’s all fine and well, but he asked specifically what government branch McFadden operates under. It’s clear this sheriff has no clue. Chesser, looking quite confused himself, and says to McFadden, “This is not where I was anticipating getting stuck. Um, are you aware of how many branches of government there are?” When the sheriff tells him, “No,” he explains the three branches of government to the sheriff like he’s five years old. He then asks, “Of those three, which do you fall under?” Shocking no one, the sheriff says he “believes” he falls under the “judicial” branch. Chesser responds, “You are incorrect, sir. You fall under the executive.” Somebody send this sheriff back to school so he can learn a little bit about the very own government that employs him.
This entire awkward exchange took place due to immigration enforcement operations in the state of North Carolina. The meeting was conducted after a young Ukranian immigrant woman lost her life in Charlotte on a train. There was back-and-forth conversation regarding ICE. In the end, McFadden stated, “We follow the law, when the law is produced, we follow the law” regarding ICE. He also confirmed that his office is cooperating with ICE agents in North Carolina.
One commenter stated, “I’m sure immigrants knew all of those answers.” If they’re specifically on the path to citizenship, they likely had to answer various questions concerning the government branches. Another commenter quipped, “Maybe start with some easier questions like: What color is the sky, how do you like your eggs cooked, what’s your favorite soda?”
