Election Day hasn’t even arrived yet, but a legal battle is already brewing in Texas. A group of Republicans has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the official approval of election results unless every paper ballot is counted by hand. With the midterms just days away, the move has sparked frustration among Texans, some of whom are questioning why the fight over election results is starting before voters have even finished casting their ballots.
As reported by Democracy Docket, the Potter County Republican Party and its chairman, Daniel Rogers, filed the lawsuit on October 27 against local elections administrator Christy Benge. They’re demanding that every paper ballot across Texas be counted by hand before the November 3 election results can be officially approved. The lawsuit raises concerns about potential hacking, artificial intelligence and voting machine errors, although it provides no evidence that any Texas votes have actually been altered.
Interestingly, Texas already has rules requiring election officials to manually check a sample of ballots to ensure voting machines are counting accurately. However, the lawsuit goes much further, calling for every single paper ballot to be counted by hand before the results are officially approved. With millions of Texans expected to vote, such a process could take considerable time and potentially delay the final outcome of the election.
For now, the lawsuit remains a legal challenge, meaning Texas election officials haven’t been ordered to change how ballots are counted. Whether a judge will agree with the Republicans’ demands remains to be seen. With Election Day fast approaching, however, the case has added another layer of uncertainty to an already heated election season.
Texas Residents Slam Republican Lawsuit Demanding Hand Count of Every Ballot
Over on Reddit, Texans aren’t holding back their frustrations over the lawsuit. “Not even election day yet and they have already sued and claimed AI hacked the votes…..this is pathetic,” one user complained, while another asked, “They sure are scared, aren’t they?” A third was equally unimpressed, declaring, “Republicans will do anything to make sure democracy is as hampered as possible.”
Others questioned how practical a statewide hand count would be. “It would take months to count the large counties,” one commenter warned, before pointing to the enormous number of ballots expected in Harris County. Another questioned who would foot the bill, arguing that the GOP should cover the entire cost and that the process should be livestreamed for transparency.
However, not everyone opposed the idea. “Fine with this. As long as officials can actually count them all and not have annoying delays,” one Reddit user remarked. For now, the Republicans’ demands remain in the hands of a judge, and the clock is ticking.
