Gamers have traditionally not been the most friendly crowd. Be it PlayStation users smashing their setup when Horizon Zero Dawn came to PC or the decades-long battle between consoles. Luckily, today we have some rather heartwarming news. Over on r/pcmasterrace, NVIDIA opened up for their next project against the Corona Virus

“Coronavirus specific GPU projects are now available at folding@home. CPU projects coming ASAP. Join us in fighting against Covid-19 (Corona Virus) !”

In this, NVIDIA announced that PC owners and gamers with unused GPU and CPU computing power could put it to use to fight Corona Virus and several other illnesses. Interested users can download it here and join the Folding@home project

What is the Folding@home project?

The Folding@home project uses computing power to study the process of protein folding to aid research on various diseases such as the Corona Virus, Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, and Parkinson’s. The program analyses data and returns that to research centers, essentially making scientists get a faster route to information.

Can my computer run it?

In the application, there are power sliders you can choose from. You can use light/medium/ full options, depending on what you are aiming to achieve and what you’re able to achieve. Even if your PC isn’t hugely strong, you may be able to make a crucial step in research. According to pcmasterrace.org many people that run on medium or high don’t notice a performance difference when just browsing the internet. They recommend the use of TThrottle to suspend and resume tasks to keep the CPU/GPU temperature at a comfortable heat.

The most important thing to take from all of this is that no matter how weak your PC is, you may be able to help in some facet, be it running the application, or just sharing the information with someone who could help. All the needed links have been given above. Make sure to do what you can and stay safe.

Will you be taking part? Would you like to see more pieces on this or how we can help? How are you getting on?

My name is James, I'm a 21-year-old aspiring writer and the fact that you're reading this probably means you want to know more about me(hopefully) I've been gaming practically all my life and pretending I know more than I actually do about them for just as long. I love talking about games just as much as I like playing them and some of my favourite games to talk about are Yakuza, Persona and Dark Souls. Feel free to let me bully you about them in the future!
