On TikTok, a woman from O‘ahu shared her disturbing encounter with an Uber driver that left her shaken and afraid. In a video titled “Safety Alert for Queer People and Women,” she explained that she had made plans to meet with her wife for dinner at a certain location and had called up the driver to pick her up. According to her, when she got in, the driver started playing some very questionable music and began complaining about how “music used to be sweet innuendos” but was now “too racy.” She initially tried to brush it off but soon realized the tone of the conversation was about to shift.
More on What Happened
The man began ranting about gay and transgender people, claiming that “the rainbow parade is coming for our children” and that “trans people are turning kids gay.” She quietly texted her wife to track her location, aware that the conversation was becoming unsafe. As a lesbian, she said she had to choose between confronting him and staying silent to avoid further danger. At one point, the driver looked at her through the mirror and made an unsettling statement about gay people and violence that left her frozen in shock. She said she tried to defuse the moment, but the driver continued talking about it while she sat trembling in the back seat, counting the minutes until she could get out.
As their trip was coming to an end, he asked if she was going to choir practice since he was taking her to a church. To protect herself, she made up a story that she was meeting her boyfriend. The moment she got out and into her wife’s car, she said she began hyperventilating from panic and relief. After reporting the incident to Uber, she said the company only responded with automated messages and offered to give her a $5 Uber Cash credit.
The woman is now pleading for a real investigation to be carried out, saying the man should not be driving passengers again. “Please tag Uber down below,” she said. “Nobody should have to ride with him.”
