Have you ever heard the expression, one man’s trash is another one’s treasure? Well, most of the time, that’s a load of crap, trash is just trash, and oftentimes, it ends up everywhere BUT the trash bin. This is what was going on in Oakland, California, as locals kept using a massive illegal dumping site smack dab near a neighborhood. One good samaritan took it upon himself to clean it up.
In a post created by pengweather in the r/interestingasfu*k Reddit page, the topic’s creator describes what he is doing and why he is doing it.
I try my best to help out as much as I can for the community. My goal is to help reduce illegal dumping in the Bay Area by 5 – 10% a year from now. To do so, I try my best to show my work and inspire people to volunteer, hold their leaders accountable, etc.
In the time-lapse video, we can see him in full gear, tackling a pretty huge dumping site and completely transforming the location with nothing more than determination and a good spirit. It looks far better than it used to before he showed up, and he wasn’t paid for this, and it wasn’t required of him. He just felt like cleaning and leading by example—traits we can all admire, and our fellow Reddit posters all agreed.
“Not all heroes wear capes. Thank you so much for caring about your community.”
“That’s such a great action for your community – and the World as a whole.”
“Doing the Lord’s work… And the City of Oakland’s work”
“Your posts are my dose of positive news from US. Good work and very satisfying.”
The creator Pengweather also created a huge post about how he got started doing volunteer work, which acts as a guide for others in the Bay Area or any local community who want to chip in and help make our communities a little bit safer and a whole lot cleaner.
