Oblivion Remastered: How To Join The Mages Guild

No quick diploma courses for this one, sadly

Here at The Nerd Stash, you might have noticed some telltale signs that we like nerds, including the ones in fantasy video games, aka mages. Thankfully, Oblivion Remastered also gives us a chance to be nerds in a fantasy setting as well, and there’s no faster way to become an official nerd in Tamriel than being a mage of the Mages Guild.

Getting Started with The Mages Guild

It’s worth noting that you can actually join the Mages Guild in Oblivion Remastered even if your class is not magically inclined. Of course, it’s better if you pick a spellcaster class since the Mages Guild can give free spells as rewards, sometimes just getting in is enough.

The good news is that all major cities in Cyrodiil have a Mages Guild, except for the Imperial City and Kvatch. So to kickstart your magic college, go to the following locations and look for buildings with blue signposts shaped like eyes, as those are the Mages Guilds:

  • Anvil (Restoration Magic)
  • Bravil (Illusion Magic)
  • Bruma (All-rounder)
  • Cheydinhal (Alteration Magic)
  • Chorrol (Conjuration Magic)
  • Leyawiin (Mysticism Magic)
  • Skingrad (Destruction Magic)

The closest at the start of the game would be either Chorrol or Cheydinhal, and we recommend Chorrol since it’s close to the start of the main quest in Weynon Priory. Once you find these buildings, walk inside and talk to each mage until you see an option to join. Each Mages Guild Hall has a specific proprietor or head who can allow you to join.

Strict Requirements from the Mages Guild

Just because you’ve located a Mages Guild Hall doesn’t mean you’re instantly qualified to be an actual “mage.” You’ll need to go through some troublesome hoops before they all recognize and recommend you for the main seat at the Imperial City.

  1. Talk to every Mages Guild head in the aforementioned cities above.
  2. Initiate and complete a recommendation questline for every Mages Guild.

Each Mages Guild in the aforementioned cities specializes in their own magic discipline, so you might want to take note of that if you want to increase your spell potency in a particular field.

In any case, joining the Mages Guild in Oblivion involves quite a lot of quests. Afterward, they’ll all recommend you, and you’ll be able to access the Arcane University. You’ll also be promoted from Associate to Apprentice. From here, your journey to formalize your mage-hood has begun, and you’ll also be rewarded with spells and robes.

Note that the whole Mage Guild questline doesn’t end here, and there’s a further and deeper questline that involves getting a staff and maybe uncovering something intriguing within the guild. You will also need to be promoted to advance the questline. Here are the Mages Guild ranks:

  • Associate
  • Apprentice
  • Journeyman
  • Evoker
  • Conjurer
  • Magician
  • Warlock
  • Wizard
  • Master-Wizard
  • Arch-Mage

By the end of it, you take over the entire Mages Guild in Cyrodiil, which is a fitting reward given all you have to go through.
