The Oculus Rift is available for preorder on the official Oculus webpage.
The barrier to entry is a staggering $599, which includes: the headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, power cables, and an Xbox One controller. Additionally, the unit comes with 2 games free, EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale. The expected shipping date is March 2016 with an arrival date of May 2016.
To make sure you don’t spend all your hard earned money on something you can’t even use, Oculus has uploaded a compatibility software check for potential buyers. The program runs through your PC’s specs and determines how the Rift will run on your system, if at all.
As companies gear up for launching of virtual reality into the mainstream gaming medium, digital media analysts group SuperData has predicted the overall rough sales of each VR rig launching in 2016. PC headsets Oculus and the HTC Vive are expected to do well in their debut year, with a estimated 6.6 million units sold between the two competitors. While Sony’s PSVR lags behind with only 1.9 million estimated units sold.
The lower estimate for the PSVR comes as a shock, seeing as SuperData guesses the headset will cost $400, making it the least expensive option on the market for consumers.
