The official trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder was released during the NBA final, as was teased over the weekend. The trailer opens with a narration by director Taika Waititi reprising his role as the monstrous yet gentle Korg. Entertainment Weekly breaks down the trailer, which features Korg explaining that after saving the world for “the 500th time,” Thor (Chris Hemsworth) decided to get in shape and go from “dad bod to god bod” to reclaim his title as the one and only Thor. But Korg “spoke too soon” as Thor is shocked to find that his hammer, Mjolnir, is now wielded by his ex-girlfriend Jane (Natalie Portman).
Thor Trailer Features an Old Flame and a New Villain
Portman’s taking on the Mighty Thor persona was already shown when the teaser trailer was released. However, this is the first time we’ve seen Thor reacting to seeing his old flame wielding his hammer. And as Waititi teased just over three weeks ago, it does look like “a real mindf**k” for the god of thunder. When Jane asks Thor how long it’s been, Thor responds, “eight years, seven months, and six days give or take.” It looks like omeone is still a little hung up on the past.
However, this relationship complication is only one of Thor’s challenges. The Thor: Love and Thunder trailer also features our first look at Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, a creepy-looking bad guy with one goal in mind: “all gods will die.” The Direct explains the comic book origins of the character, who wants revenge for the gods not saving his family from death despite all of their prayers. We will see how deeply this tragic backstory is explored when the film is released.
Zeus “Exposes” Thor in Trailer
This new trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder also introduce us to Zeus, portrayed by Russell Crowe. In a hilarious section at the end of the trailer, a disguised Thor is bound before Zeus, who uses his powers to “flick” off Thor’s disguise. However, he flicks a little too hard, completely disrobing Thor, causing the women around him to faint. The MCU clearly isn’t holding anything back with this one.
Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in theaters on July 8.
