‘Oh Yay. A $75 Credit Where My Last Bill Was $1,400’: California Households Get Electricity Relief After Costly Summer

Every little helps

After a costly summer of trying to keep their homes cool, millions of California households are getting some welcome relief on their electricity bills. Eligible customers are automatically receiving credits averaging around $75, with no application required. While any help will likely be welcomed by families feeling the squeeze, the announcement has also drawn attention to just how expensive keeping the lights on and the AC running has become across the Golden State.

According to the California Governor’s Office, the credits are part of the California Climate Credit and will return a total of $886 million to electricity customers this year. The money comes through the state’s Cap-and-Invest Program, which requires companies that produce large amounts of climate pollution to purchase emissions allowances, with some of that revenue then returned directly to households through their utility bills.

This year, the electricity credits were distributed during August and September, when many households are dealing with higher bills caused by increased summer energy use. The exact amount varies depending on the utility provider, meaning not every customer will receive $75, but the credit is applied automatically to eligible accounts rather than requiring Californians to sign up or submit an application.

The relief comes at a time when electricity costs remain a major concern for households across California, particularly during the hotter summer months when air conditioning can send monthly bills soaring. Thankfully, the credit will take some of the sting out of those costs, although the amounts being reported by residents show why even an automatic discount may only go so far for families facing bills stretching into the hundreds of dollars.

California Residents Compare Electricity Bills as Credits Arrive

Judging by the reactions on Reddit, plenty of Californians will happily take the extra help, although some understandably questioned how far $75 will really go against their soaring electricity bills. One resident sarcastically wrote, “Oh yay. A $75 credit where my last bill was $1400…” while another joked, “75 dollars on my 1200 dollar bill, I don’t feel robbed at all! /s”

Others shared similarly eye-watering figures. “I paid them $2100 for three months of electricity this summer already….” one person revealed, while another said, “My bill for my 3-bedroom last month was almost a grand.” Someone else was more blunt about the relief, writing, “$75 is chump change for the power companies with their overpriced rates!”

Not everyone was skeptical, however, and some Californians were genuinely pleased to see a little money knocked off their bills. “I’m not going to pretend we don’t have high taxes but this is a win for sure. I feel like we’re so progressive on the environment,” one person wrote. Another simply summed up their reaction with, “That’s good news.”

For California families who have spent the summer watching their electricity bills climb, any money taken off the total will undoubtedly be welcome. An average credit of $75 may not erase the sting of a $1,000 bill, but with millions of households receiving the relief automatically, it should at least leave a little more money in people’s pockets. And at a time when the cost of almost everything seems to be heading in the wrong direction, that’s some genuinely good news for communities across the Golden State.
