A video of an Ohio woman’s father painting his old couch instead of buying a new one has viewers rethinking their own furniture decisions. While some can’t get past the fact that he’s painting the couch right on the living room carpet. Others are ready to embrace his DIY approach, especially in this economy.
Posted to TikTok by @megmiitch, the video is captioned “bro what r we doing” and shows her father painting his dark brown couch a much lighter beige. Instead of the usual supplies for a project like this, he’s using a glass bowl to hold the paint and working directly on the living room carpet without a drop cloth.
The Ohio creator also revealed how attached her father is to the couch, saying in a follow-up comment that he sleeps on it every night.

Viewers Weigh In on the Couch Makeover
The lack of carpet protection stressed people out before the paint even dried. “Not covering the carpet is diabolical,” one commenter wrote. Another admitted, “Omg and no plastic on the carpet my anxiety.”
Some viewers thought the dad was taking the DIY approach too far. “If this was my husband I would put the couch outside when he wasn’t home and set it on fire!” one wrote. Another suggested the Ohio creator’s mom must be stressed. Another said they couldn’t live with a man who would go to these lengths.
Some viewers weren’t convinced the paint job would last. “It’ll just crack btw,” one commenter warned. Another said they’d tried it themselves and that it didn’t work.
Others thought the project made sense, especially with how expensive new furniture can be. One commenter noted that leather paint is designed to withstand wear and can completely change a couch’s color.
Another supported the idea of fixing things instead of replacing them, writing, “If it’s broke, FIX IT. Not throw it away and buy a new one.” Someone else was ready to follow his lead, saying, “in this economy im about to be just like your dad.”
Viewers couldn’t agree on whether the Ohio father was being cheap or proving himself a penny-saving genius. However, one thing people seemed to agree on: he absolutely should have covered the carpet before starting.
