The holidays are often a hectic time for many families, and those with large broods may feel like they’re dragging their children from one celebration to the next. Of course, this is likely accompanied by lots of gift giving, and sometimes the kids simply walk away with too much because of all of the family members who love them and want to buy for them. Because of this, one Ohio grandmother is putting her foot down and refusing to buy her grandchildren any gifts for Christmas.
In a video posted by TikTok user @tammie_time_, the grandmother from Ohio explains that her grandchildren have nine different grandparent or sets of grandparents. They also have multiple aunts and uncles. Of course, they all want to buy gifts for the children during the holidays and for their birthdays.
So, this grandma opted to do things a bit differently. She decided a while ago that she didn’t need to buy her grandkids toys that will likely get broken, pile up, or get lost. Instead, she wants the kids to get more out of her relationship with them.
Ohio Grandmother Reveals Why She Doesn’t Buy Her Grandkids Gifts
“Another Christmas is right around the corner, where I will not be buying gifts for my grandchildren. You think you hate me, don’t you?” she says to start off the video. “I talked to my son and I told him I’m not going to be the one to buy gifts,” she continued. “I’m going to invest for them instead.”
The woman explains that every month she puts a flat amount of money into an account for her four grandchildren. Then on their birthdays and on Christmas they get a bonus amount of money.
While this may not seem like a fun gift for the kids while they’re young, they will certainly be thankful for it later. The grandmother says that she wants her grandkids to have a better start into adulthood than she had, and with the money that she’s accumulating for them it will be a great way for them to get on their feet as they navigate the world as young adults.
“So, you thought you hated me. Maybe not so much anymore,” she ends the video. Of course, social media had plenty to say about the grandmother’s method, and many applauded her for thinking about the kids’ futures.
“My in laws did this for my children. They went to college and spent zero dollars!!!” one person commented. “Mom of 3 here who HATES toys for Christmas. I would love this so much,” said another. “I wish someone would have done this for me,” a third person chimed in. “I’d much rather have that for my kids than toys!” a fourth comment read.
It looks like this Ohio grandmother might be on to something. She certainly has invested in her grandchildren’s futures, and they will most likely thank her for it when they’re older.
