Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is drawing attention online after an awkward moment with a 10-year-old boy at President Donald Trump’s rally went viral. Ramaswamy invited the child onstage after noticing his sign about his father being deployed, but things took an unexpected turn when the Republican candidate attempted to pick him up.
The moment happened Saturday during Trump’s campaign rally in Vandalia, Ohio. Ramaswamy spotted the boy, identified as Hunter, in the crowd and drew attention to his sign, which said he was a proud military child and that his father was currently deployed.
Ramaswamy invited Hunter onto the stage before announcing, “I’m gonna pick you up!” However, the attempt did not go quite as planned.
As Ramaswamy tried to lift the 10-year-old, he appeared to lose his grip momentarily as Hunter leaned backward. Ramaswamy quickly steadied him, then got him upright and joked, “Big guy!”
Hunter appeared fine after the awkward exchange. Ramaswamy then invited the boy’s sister onto the stage, although he decided against attempting to pick her up. Instead, she joined him at the microphone and helped lead the crowd in an Ohio chant.
The brief interaction quickly attracted attention after video of it began circulating on X. Political journalist Sam Stein shared the clip with the simple reaction, “Oh man.”

Other social media users also had plenty to say about the unexpected campaign moment. One person joked, “How is he going to lift the economy when he can’t even lift that kid?” Another declared, “He just lost Ohio.”
Others were less convinced the harmless mishap deserved the ridicule it received, with the boy appearing uninjured and Ramaswamy continuing the interaction with Hunter and his sister afterward.
The viral moment came during a major campaign stop for Ohio Republicans. Trump traveled to Vandalia to campaign alongside Ramaswamy and Republican Sen. Jon Husted ahead of the November midterm elections.
Ramaswamy, a former 2024 presidential candidate, is running against Democrat Amy Acton for Ohio governor. While Saturday’s rally was meant to boost Republican candidates heading into the final month of the campaign, Ramaswamy’s unexpected encounter with a 10-year-old military kid became one of the night’s most widely shared moments.
