Ohio Mother Feels Vindicated Over Dropping Insurance After Discovering Cost of Her Medication, ‘Can we quit car insurance next?’

In many such cases

There’s not a single regular person in America who actually likes their health insurance, it seems. Not only are people paying too much for even basic insurance every month, the deductibles and out-of-pocket costs are entirely different beasts. One mother in Ohio has had enough and she is done paying for health insurance. In fact, she got rid of “everything” her “big girl corporate job” offered her. She even found a cheaper alternative!

What Megan (TikTok/mmm_____22) found most disturbing was the huge bills she was getting when she had insurance, stating her out-of-pocket costs when up “30%.” So, she did what many Americans are doing and bought her prescriptions through telehealth services. As a result, Megan asks, “Tell me why, prior with my benefits, that I was paying an astronomical amount for out-of-pocket.” She explains that her regular prescriptions were costing “$50” but going through telehealth, it dropped it to just “$8.”

Megan then shares basically most of her close friends and family, including her husband, think she’s just “crazy.” But Megan argues it’s just simple math. With “basic coverage,” she says, she’d be paying nearly a grand a month on health insurance for her and her son. She adds that’s just the start and doesn’t even include out-of-pocket costs or deductibles. “I am refusing to participate,” Megan says.

What was most fortuitous for her is she was even expecting to pay at least “$250” for just three of her prescriptions. But after speaking with her doctor’s, including her son’s, and getting information on “self-pay” expenses, according to Megan it was incredibly low.

An Overwhelming Number of People Responded With the Same Disdain and Frustration

Numerous comments on Megan’s TikTok video was extremely negative towards health insurance. And many shared their own experience, amounting to thousands of dollars in medical bills just from a handful of comments.

One commenter shared what she was charged for an epidural, “My epidural was $20,000 — when I told them I was cash pay it was $450.” A mother in the comments responded, stating her and her son’s insurance suddenly skyrocketed to “$1800” a month.

Another commenter claiming to be a Costco pharmacy technician offered advice. “They offer a Costco discount program for uninsured patients.” Others had luck with GoodRx.
One commenter asked, “Can we quit car insurance next?” Some disagreed, arguing that without it, the victims of a car accident won’t get compensation.

This also sparked conversation on the equally confusing nature of car insurance being just as unreliable. It doesn’t matter what type of insurance people have, but it’s clear they feel ripped off by all of them.
