Breakups can be messy at the best of times. But things get more complicated when someone wants an expensive gift returned after a relationship ends. That’s apparently what occurred recently with a couple in Oklahoma. In essence, a woman accused her ex-boyfriend of stealing an iPad and contacted police, but officers determined the device had been gifted to him and declined to pursue the matter. The footage is currently circulating online.
Originally shared on TikTok, the video has since circulated on Reddit. In it, we see a woman confronting her ex-boyfriend about the iPad in question, and she’s threatening to get the police involved. “You wanna bet? I will.” she says, while her former boyfriend responds, “You wanna call the police? Okay.”
The footage then cuts to a uniformed Oklahoma officer attempting to resolve the dispute between the former partners. “Did you give him the iPad, as a gift?” the officer asks the woman. In response, the ex-girlfriend states, “Yes, I did.” and the officer confirms, “No arrest.” The ex-boyfriend is obviously pleased with this, and says politely, “Thank you, sir.“
However, this doesn’t seem to solve the issue completely, as the ex-girlfriend retorts, “But it’s in my name.” though the cop still sides with the former boyfriend. “But you gave it to him.” explains the Oklahoma officer. The ex-boyfriend happily exclaims, “I appreciate you, sir. Thank you so much for being an awesome cop.” The disgruntled ex-girlfriend replies, “That is [expletive].”
Calmly, the cop continues, “You just admitted to me that you gave it to him as a gift, okay? There’s no police officer. There’s no deputy. There’s nobody that will say, okay, we’re going to force him to give it to you. Okay?” The ex-boyfriend then asks the woman to leave his property, as the dispute appears to be occurring outside of his house. The cop agrees that this is legally within his right, and politely asks the ex-girlfriend to leave. After a final awkward goodbye, the clip comes to a close.
With over 1.2M views on TikTok alone, reactions have come pouring in. On TikTok, one user felt sorry for the cop, writing, “he’s cold ASF he just wants to go home” while another added, “What she mean it’s in her name it’s not a car 🤣🤣🤣”. Meanwhile, over on Reddit, another netizen sympathised with the cop at the heart of the drama, penning, “lol that cop wanted to be anywhere else“. A fourth declared, “That poor cop is freezing“.
Fortunately, aside from some hurt feelings, the dispute appears to have been resolved, with the ex-boyfriend allowed to keep the iPad that had been gifted to him. Ultimately, this incident serves as a reminder that once a gift is given, ownership typically can’t be reclaimed after a breakup.
