Exciting news for those not yet suffering from Star Wars fatigue. During an interview with MTV at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked if they had anything in development related to the Knights of the Old Republic era. Her response was guarded, but definitely fan-pleasing.
You know, we talk about that all the time. Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much. We don’t have a crystal ball, you know. We tried a little bit with Solo [A Star Wars Story] to see if we could do two movies a year and whether or not there was really an opportunity for that and we felt that’s not going to work so we backed off that a little bit. But it doesn’t mean we don’t think about lots of different stories because that’s the exciting thing about this universe.
So we have a confirmation that they have… something in the works, but no indication what it will be. Most theories point to this being the setting for the trilogy that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working on. That could be exciting, but it’s not confirmed at this time. For all we know it could take the form of something for Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+, in a similar vein to The Mandolarian.
What is for sure is that regardless of the feelings of some fans, and the possibility of the franchise losing momentum, it looks like they don’t plan to shelf Star Wars anytime soon. With two trilogies, a streaming series, and a new game on the horizon, it seems we will have plenty of new Star Wars content to look forward to. It will be interesting to see which form of that content this Old Republic project takes.
