Older Student From Louisiana Bullies Her Roommates: ‘Your Older Flatmate Could Be Needing Mental Health Services’

What a nightmare

If there are many problems living with neighbors, this can be even worse with roommates; at least with neighbors, you don’t share the same space. Although there are all kinds of roommates, we’re not going to say that they’re all bad. However, that is not the case for this old university student in Louisiana, who bullies her younger roommate, and the situation keeps escalating. The bullying has gotten so bad that living together is basically impossible.

Redditor YuriDoggy shared on r/badroommates how they were living in an apartment outside their college campus with three other girls without any problems. That is, until two of the roommates had to leave, and OP began to suffer bullying from their 50-year-old roommate, who is also a student at the same college in Louisiana. The problems began after summer vacation, when the apartment management announced that they would be conducting inspections for new roommates to move in. At this point, the older roommate became aggressive toward OP and told her to “clean up my shit,” even though the apartment was in good condition and the inspections found nothing wrong with the place.

According to OP, they rarely speak with that roommate and hardly ever use the common areas, so they didn’t feel the need to clean them up. It’s not that OP left a mess, but they have a microwave and mini fridge in their room. Also, on the few occasions that OP uses a common area, such as the kitchen, they always wipe down and sweep. Even so, the situation continued to escalate despite OP’s attempts to resolve the issue. The old roommate always tries to argue, put bike locks on the cabinets, trash-talks about OP, and on one occasion stood guard at OP’s door all night.

OP described being afraid that the old roommate would do something else, and about being stuck in the lease for a year. To this, several Redditors responded with things like ‘Depends upon which country you’re in (I’m assuming USA) but contact student and housing services asap Document what’s been happening (with dates and times) Your older flatmate could be needing mental health services and you need a new place to stay,‘ shared dermot111.

Fortunately, OP posted an update in which they informed the department management about the living situation. For now, OP will have to wait two weeks while management organizes all the new residents, and after an additional fee, OP could change departments. Although not everyone agrees that OP should pay when management acknowledged the bullying.
