While traveling across states on a 1,200-mile trip to visit relatives, anything could happen. Hopefully, nothing bad happens, of course, but one Oregon veteran on such a road trip to visit their parents made the disturbing discovery that they were being tracked. Before the long drive, the car was at a dealership being serviced and was parked in an unsecured lot. After they started the journey, their iPhone notified them several times with an “unknown HEY TAG detected with you” alert. It wasn’t until later that they realized two trackers had been placed on their car.
Having your vehicle tracked by a stranger or stalker is scary enough, but finding two on their car really bamboozled the Oregon veteran. “I’m just really confused and wonder why they would stick the smaller one with the big one unless they are communicating in order to preserve battery life,” they remarked in their r/whatisit post. “And the fact they were right next to each other, so I found both at the same time. Seems very unsophisticated for whoever put these there.”
Needless to say, multiple Redditors were immediately suspicious of the dealership, as it was the last place the car had been before the long 1,200-mile trek. “That’s exactly what I thought, but dealer is adamant that it’s not theirs,” OP responded. Some people concurred that maybe a random passerby had placed the trackers on the car while it was in the unsecured lot. There’s also the possibility this culprit mistook OP’s car for someone else’s, seeing how they claim they have no history of stalkers, crimes, or unsettled matters with anyone.
One observant commenter identified the tracker with the “FCC ID xmr201707bg96,” saying how it’s using a “Quectel BG96 LTEModule GPS tracker board” and connected to LandSeaAir. “$50 bucks for device and then $10 a month is the cheapest subscription,” adds OP after looking up the tracker on Amazon. So that answers what model the main tracker is, but the Oregon veteran was strongly advised by commenters to contact the authorities about the matter immediately.
“I just wanted to say the police will take this seriously depending on your location. This just happened with my girlfriend and an ex,” said a Redditor, recalling some crazy ex-boyfriend had tried tracking down the girlfriend before cops got involved. Some people suggested giving it to truckers or a biker gang for some fun trading. However, letting the police take care of the trackers and identify the stalker is obviously the best option, which OP claims to have done.
