There are many hypocrites in the world, but this man might just be vying for the top spot. Recently, a Reddit user going by the name Dear-Caterpillar-298 posted a warning in the New Orleans subreddit that quickly caught attention. The post included photos of a man casually eating at a restaurant. According to the user, they were dining at Nudo in Metairie, Louisiana, when they overheard the man speaking loudly and confidently, claiming that he owns a building in the state and currently has “illegal” immigrants working for him. What made it even more disturbing was that he allegedly said he planned to let them finish the job before reporting them to ICE.
Disturbed by what they heard, the Redditor took to social media to share the encounter and raise awareness. The post gained a decent amount of attention, racking up hundreds of upvotes and a flood of comments. Many New Orleans Reddit users expressed immediate outrage and disgust, shocked that someone could be so openly shameless. Some couldn’t believe there were still people who would exploit others and then brag about turning them in. One user simply wrote, “This is disgusting,” summing up the general sentiment.
Others encouraged the original poster to spread the warning further by posting it in more subreddits and even in local Louisiana Facebook groups to help identify the man. Several people said they hoped someone would recognize the Metairie man and expose his identity, believing that public accountability was the least he deserved.
Some commenters couldn’t help but point out the irony of the Metairie man using chopsticks to eat his meal while planning to call ICE on the very people who suffered and feared deportations. They found it hypocritical and disgusting that he could enjoy the culture’s cuisine while showing open hostility toward its people.
Others speculated that the man’s real motive might have been to avoid paying the workers by reporting them before compensation was due. One Redditor wrote, “For real. This is why things like Workers’ Comp insurance requirements and paying for injured workers used to apply even if they weren’t citizens. It was to prevent situations like this, where someone knowingly hires undocumented labor and then screws them over.”
However, not everyone took the post at face value. Some users pointed out that Dear-Caterpillar-298 wasn’t a particularly active Redditor, raising the possibility that they might have a personal vendetta against the Louisiana man and were fabricating the story to stir up outrage. In response, the original poster clarified that they were a local from New Orleans, of Hispanic descent, and had simply been minding their business while eating with a friend at the restaurant.
They explained that the man loudly stated his plan not once, but twice, and when given a disapproving look, followed it up with, “I mean no offense.” The woman accompanying him chimed in, saying, “I don’t know why they would be offended. They’re eating the food because they know it’s good.”
Feeling uncomfortable, the Redditor said they quickly left the Metairie restaurant with their friend. They added, “I posted this because his actions affect more than just those workers, and I hope it reaches the right ears whether you or anyone else believes it or not.”
