OWN has ordered a new series, Delilah, with the same creative team of Greenleaf, days after wrapping the five-season run of the latter.
Reported by Deadline, the drama set to star Maahra Hill (Black-ish, How To Get Away With Murder) in the titular role, is being executive produced by Greenleaf’s creator Craig Wright, Charles Randolph-Wright and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films. Randolph-Wright and Cheryl Dunye (Queen Sugar, David Makes Man) will be directing the series which will also star Jill Marie Jones (Girlfriends), Susan Heyward (Orange is the New Black) and Ozioma Akagha (Marvel’s Runaways).
The plot revolves around Delilah Connolly (Hill) who is a headstrong, principled lawyer based in Charlotte, North Carolina who left a demanding white-shoe law firm a decade ago to make time for family, making raising her children her priority. The show will take us through Delilah’s life as she takes on the cases which were ignored by the big firms; fighting against the powerful and privileged on behalf of the disenfranchised.
Managing to raise and care for her two children, Maia and Marcus as well as her nephew Dion while balancing a relationship with a frustrating ex, Delilah comes up against her own best friend Tamara in court for the first time. In a classic case of justice versus a cherished friendship, Delilah who fights for the underdog is forced to put aside her relationship with Tamara who has always represented the wealthy, to seek justice for those who need it.
Jones will play Tamara Grayson, Delilah’s confidante and best friend while Heyward portrays Demetria Barnes, Delilah’s ambitious associate, and Akagha plays Delilah’s earnest and optimistic secretary, Harper Conant. Delilah will be joining OWN’s drama series slate that includes Queen Sugar, Cherish the Day, David Makes Man and The Haves and the Have Nots. Speaking of the series, Tina Perry, president of OWN, said:
On the heels of the incredible success story of Greenleaf, we are thrilled to continue our partnership with Craig on this compelling new drama.”
The order for the show has been in the works at OWN since before the pandemic and this tale about a powerful woman who balances her responsibilities to her family and community is set to touch hearts in 2021.
