P-Valley, Katori Hall’s breakout drama based on her play, has been renewed for a second season by Starz.
P-Valley, which quickly set a new record on the Starz App for most-viewed series premiere became the summer’s must-see television series. In addition, Starz and Nielsen stats reveal that P-Valley ranks #1 among 2020’s new premium series with African American viewers to date and is also in the Top 5 of all premium series among African American households.
The hour-long drama about stories of hope, love and identity followed the employees of a strip club, The Pynk, in the Mississippi Delta.
The eight episodes of the first season delved into a set of compelling, complex characters while exploring everything from race, and mental health to the female gaze rampant in the sparkly setting of a strip club; P-Valley’s upcoming season will take the journey of these brilliantly layered characters and their secrets forward with 10 episodes.
Speaking of the success of season one and expectations for season two, Christina Davis, president of original programming for Starz, said : “Katori has delivered a provocative drama that looks beyond the glitz and into the hearts and minds of these fully realized and compelling characters, exploring them through a female gaze that invites the audience to take a walk in their stilettos. We know Katori has a lot of incredible stories to tell and a lot in store for these women in a second season.”
Created by Hall, who was also a showrunner for the first time, P-Valley’s first season had an empowering team of women behind the scenes ; a line-up of all-female directors, such as award-winning music video director Karena Evans (Drake: Nice for What, SZA: Garden), Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry), Millicent Shelton (30 Rock), Tamra Davis (Single Ladies), Geeta V. Patel (Superstore), Tasha Smith (Black Lightning), Sydney Freeland (Grey’s Anatomy) and Barbara Brown (Scream Queens). Chernin Entertainment serves as Executive Producer.
The show stars Brandee Evans as Mercedes, Nicco Annan as Uncle Clifford, Shannon Thornton as Miss Mississippi, Elarica Johnson as Autumn Night, Skyler Joy (Ma) as Gidget etc
Equally appreciated by critics and audiences, it appears that P-Valley has a lot more in store for its characters in the upcoming season.
