If you start out as a Witch or Sorcerer in Path of Exile 2, then you’ll likely encounter Spirit pretty early on. The magic-wielding classes start out with 100 Spirit initially, but any other class starts out with none and needs to find a way to accumulate more before it can be used. However, there’s no real explanation as to how you’re supposed to get your hands on Spirit, or even how to use it, so we’re here to walk you through that exactly. Let’s take a look at how to get and use Spirit in Path of Exile 2.

How To Get Spirit

There’s only one real way to increase your Spirit, whether you’re a magic class or otherwise. Before you can increase your Spirit reserves, you need to defeat specific bosses and collect items from them that permanently increase your Spirit. Throughout the duration of the Acts, there is one boss in each Act that drops an item that increases your Spirit by a certain amount. However, since those bosses aren’t essential to complete the main questline, they might be overlooked.

The first of these bosses is found in Freythorn, and hidden behind Path of Exile 2‘s explanation of the Ritual mechanic. After entering Freythorn, you’ll need to complete three different Ritual Altar sites, which can be found throughout the map. After completing each of the rituals, you’ll need to speak to Finn, who explains a bit of what’s going on.

By the time you reach the final altar and activate it, you won’t be met with a horde of enemies that you can take out in a few seconds–you’ll be up against a boss, The King of Mists. However, this boss has two phases, so after you take his health down the first time, he’ll transform into something much larger and regain full health. After he’s defeated, he will drop a quest item, the Gembloom Skull, which grants +30 to maximum spirit permanently. After picking it up, you can use it by using the X button on controller, or by right-clicking on it with your mouse.

After you’ve used your Gembloom Skull, you’ll earn 30 max Spirit, and also have a new item sitting in your inventory: an Uncut Spirit Gem. Interacting with the Uncut Spirit Gem will allow you to access the Gemcutting menu to craft your uncut gem into a spirit-based skill. These are all passive abilities that you don’t need to actually use.

For me, as a Witch, it allows me to gain more minions that automatically spawn. For other classes, it can be a certain tyle of shield, or an aura skill. After your Spirit Gem is cut into the skill you want, you can drag it from your inventory into your skill list to activate it.

Path of Exile 2 is now available in Early Access on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.

Jordan is an experienced fantasy writer who spends hours behind her laptop, and lost in the pages of a book. She strives to be a successful gaming blogger, and has no complaint about the hours of game time she used to increase her knowledge of all things “geek”. She primarily writes gaming articles and fantasy novels. Ark: Survival Evolved is a favorite, along with Diablo 3, Warframe and Minecraft lately, though you can’t forget the good old Magic the Gathering card game! Writing about games truly gives her joy as it gives her another perspective to look at games from, a reason to really look into the mechanics of the game.
