It hasn’t been a day since Grinding Gear Games (GGG) launched Path of Exile 2 Early Access, but the unfinished game has already sold 1 million copies. Presumably, this equates to 1 million players all pouring into the servers (often at the same time). And while GGG is grateful for its community’s intense enthusiasm for the game, it’s also a bit worried over something else.
GGG’s Jonathan Rogers took to X/Twitter to post a video announcement. In it, he mentioned Path of Exile 2 reaching or surpassing 1 million players. Apparently, it was unexpected and they didn’t anticipate that many players for their game. This brings with it a new host of problems and their celebration might have to be cut short. Here’s the tweet:
Rogers simply had to set expectations for some players, especially those waiting to get in over the course of the weekend. There are most likely going to be some queues and as we’re all aware, launch queues for live-service games can be frustrating. Take Blizzard’s Diablo 4, for example.
An Unexpected Success for Path of Exile 2
Rogers and his team did not expect to Path of Exile 2 to gain more 1 million players in less than a day and this has apparently stressed their servers and databases. But the good news is they’re working on expanding that architecture. Moreover, there’s bound to be a lot more than 1 million players or 1 million sales.
Path of Exile 2 Early Access launched on a Friday and as you’re all aware, Saturday and Sunday are more accessible days for adult gamers. So it appears GGG’s ordeal with server capacity demand is only beginning.
Of course, let’s not ignore the upside to this. You get more Exiles to play with and GGG gets to allot more resources to improve their game and potentially stay on track with their 6-month Early Access timetable, all the way to full release.
