I haven’t watched the latest Snow White film starring Rachel Zegler, though I’ve heard mixed things about it. Unfortunately, there are various fans who simply wish the film hadn’t existed at all, taking to the internet to say anything and everything they can to criticize it. Most recently, actor Pedro Pascal, famous for his roles in The Last of Us and The Mandalorian, took to Instagram’s social media platform to express his support for the actress. However, he probably didn’t expect the amount of people in his DMs slamming him for doing so.
The above image was shared via Pascal’s Instagram stories, a feature allowing users to post an image or video temporarily to their profile. The image features a glamour shot of Zegler, captioning it with the word ‘icon.’ Despite it being a kind gesture, it was met with mixed reactions, with some people even saying that his support for Zegler could very well damage his own career.
“Fair play to the man! It’s good to see someone with the integrity to support her as she deserves backing against the creeps who are trying to bring her down.”
Zegler, a less tenured actress, started her journey with Stephen Spielberg’s West Side Story, which she landed immediately after high school. Her filmography is only about six movies long, though each one has been praised for various reasons. Concerning Snow White, she has been facing harsh criticism concerning her political activism and what the film meant when it was originally released in 1937.
She took to Twitter/X just minutes after the initial trailer was shown for Snow White at D23 in 2024 to show her support for the country, saying, “and always remember, free palestine.” Despite the gesture being done with incredible sentiment towards the thousands of people dying, it was also met with large amounts of criticism, from some saying that she should change her beliefs to others saying she shouldn’t make them known at all. It’s very startling to see just how many people are willing to excuse public executions in the name of politics.
Despite the backlash Pedro Pascal is facing, this is not the first time he’s publicly supported Rachel Zegler. In 2022, he highlighted her West Side Story performance and revealed that he was moved to tears during her performance. Hopefully, as the discourse around Zegler continues, it helps underscore the difficulty of navigating a public lifestyle while also having their own beliefs. For example, the belief that Palestine should be free from war against Israel.
