Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro posted on X that electing a Democratic trifecta this November would allow the state to codify reproductive freedom. The message, which included video from a related event featuring signs about abortion and reproductive rights, quickly drew responses online. Many commenters criticized the proposal, with some equating the language to support for abortion and others noting that abortion access is already addressed under existing Pennsylvania law. The exchange highlighted ongoing debate over the issue in the state.
The video shows Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro speaking at a podium during a campaign-style event, gesturing as people nearby clap. Signs on and around the podium include “REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM WINS” and references to abortion being on the ballot.
In the clip, Shapiro says he plans to ask a lawmaker to vote to add a constitutional right in the Pennsylvania Constitution “for women to be able to control their own bodies, have an abortion, [and] have a full range of reproductive freedom.” He adds, “That’s what we are going to do with a trifecta.” The footage captures this portion of his remarks and the immediate audience response but does not show the full event or any earlier or later statements.
Abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania under the state’s 1982 Abortion Control Act, which generally permits the procedure before roughly 24 weeks with certain requirements such as waiting periods and consent rules.
Shapiro has repeatedly stated he would veto efforts to add further restrictions and has supported measures to protect access, including after court rulings recognizing aspects of reproductive autonomy under the state constitution. The post does not detail specific legislation that a Democratic trifecta would advance beyond the general goal of codifying the right.
Responses to the Pennsylvania Governor’s Trifecta Proposal
Some users questioned the phrasing and priority. One wrote, “Codify reproductively? How? You don’t know what a woman is!” Another commented, “The Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act, which codifies Abortion and provides basic guidelines, passed in 1982. You’re promising to do something that was already done over 40 years ago.”
Others framed the proposal in stronger terms, with comments such as “So you support MURDER Josh?” and “Reproductive freedom = murder without consequences.”
Additional replies focused on other state issues, including one that said Shapiro had “done NOTHING about increased electricity rates” during his time in office.
At the same time, Shapiro has made similar statements elsewhere. In an earlier post, he wrote, “As long as I’m your Governor, the freedom to choose will be protected, and by winning up and down the ballot this November, we’ll codify abortion rights here in Pennsylvania.”
A campaign spokesperson has said the governor has a “long track record of standing up for women’s reproductive rights” and that “as long as he is Governor, this fundamental freedom will be protected.”
It remains unclear how the post will influence the broader discussion ahead of the November election. The video continues to circulate as users respond to Shapiro’s remarks on codifying reproductive freedom in Pennsylvania.
