A Pennsylvania renter says his family is afraid their bedroom ceiling could collapse after months of worsening damage that allegedly becomes more severe every time it rains.
The Philadelphia tenant, who posts on Reddit as BillyTheBrandMuffin, shared video showing a badly deteriorated ceiling with exposed sections and peeling material. He says the damage has become so concerning that his mother no longer sleeps in the room.
According to Billy, he has lived in the apartment with his mother and girlfriend for roughly three to four years. He says the ceiling began deteriorating about a year ago and gets worse whenever it rains.
“My mom doesn’t sleep [in] her room now because it’s a hazard,” he wrote.
Billy says he has repeatedly raised the issue with his landlord but claims the necessary repairs haven’t been made. The landlord’s side of the dispute isn’t included in the Reddit post.
Billy May Have Another Option
Many Reddit users told Billy to stop waiting for his landlord and get Philadelphia officials involved. That may actually be his next option.
Philadelphia says landlords are responsible for keeping rental properties safe and making necessary repairs. If a landlord won’t address a serious problem, tenants can report the conditions through 311 and request an inspection from the Department of Licenses and Inspections.
That could help determine just how serious the ceiling damage really is, rather than leaving Billy and his family wondering whether it could eventually come crashing down.
The problem is that Billy is afraid getting officials involved could leave his family without a home if the apartment is ultimately considered unsafe.
“We don’t have the funds for another spot to stay, but we really don’t wanna stay in a shelter,” he wrote.
Philadelphia does offer homelessness-prevention services for people at risk of losing their housing, including possible help finding or paying for another place to live. That doesn’t guarantee Billy’s family would qualify for assistance, but it gives them another place to turn if staying in the apartment is no longer an option.
Viewers Urge Pennsylvania Renter to Get Help
Reddit users were clearly alarmed by what they saw. “You could die if you stay there,” one person warned.
Others repeatedly urged Billy to contact a building inspector or tenant attorney instead of continuing to wait for his landlord to make repairs.
Billy understands why people are telling him to report it. His bigger fear is what happens afterward. He says his family doesn’t have the money for another place and worries the ceiling could get even worse once winter arrives.
For now, Billy appears stuck between two bad options: continuing to live beneath a ceiling he believes could collapse or reporting it and potentially finding out his family can no longer safely stay there.
The good news is that Philadelphia renters don’t have to rely solely on their landlord in situations like this. Billy can request a city inspection and seek tenant or housing assistance if the damage ultimately forces his family out.
Billy has not publicly shared a resolution to the situation, leaving it unclear whether the ceiling has since been inspected or repaired.
